Background

Gotham Food Pantry's website required a redesign. A previous UX analysis of it's website had demonstrated a multitude of issues reported both by volunteers as well as the organisation's founder.

I worked closely with the team to establish our goals:

  • Navigation: improve ease of navigation for the different subgroups which visited the site

  • Increase donations & volunteering: streamline the process of volunteering and donating, as well as providing enough information in the right places to encourage people to do so

  • Consolidate different pathways: the organisation encountered issues people where people were applying to volunteer through multiple funnels on the website. This redesign aimed to simplify these funnels.

Research

3 key activities were completed for research: examining existing charity websites to determine what made their sites effective, chatting with the team/volunteers and determing what issues they were aware of, conducting a UX audit of the existing site and also reading Nielsen Norman Group's report on attracting donors and volunteers for charity website.

Identified Issues

Research conducted revealed the following issues:

Problem #1

Navigation: lack of CTAS and poor content flow

At times, it was difficult for the user to determine what the next best steps to take were. Multiple sections including the hero section on the homepage was missing a CTA.

Problem #2

Navigation: User experience of different subgroups which visited

It was difficult for partners and food donation sites to discover where they needed to go, and volunteers would often apply through a general contact form, resulting in difficulty managing the multiple funnels. They needed people to apply through the correct channels.

Problem #3

Visual Inconsistency

At times, the old website looked untrustworthy due to rapidly changing visual styles, outdated content and less-than-optimal mobile responsiveness. There was a need to create a more consistent and coherent experience.

Problem #4

Donation UX

The Donation page in partcular needed work. It had several issues including multiple CTAs, unclear headings and poor structure. This was even more so exacerbated on mobile.

Problem #5

Building trust

Outdated content meant it was untrust worthy. There were a multitude of opportunities for building more trust with users as to encourage them through language, testimonials and simplifying different layouts.

Redesigned Site

Taking into consideration the research findings, learnings and feedback received thus far, I created high-fidelity designs which featured the full visual design and intended functionality for the final site.

Closing Statement

We are still in the process of releasing this website and I am currently working closely with the developers to QA and provide design support. I hope to monitor the effects of this website on the key indicators such as volunteering sign ups, donations and more. In the meantime however, the teams reception to the revised design have been very positive.
